99 Exercises in Play is a bizarre brain bending platformer that allows you to play thirty extremely different versions of the original Super Mario Bros level 1-1.
Level 1-1 in Super Mario Bros is one of the most iconic levels in video games but you’ve never experienced it quite like this. 99 Exercises in Play (from the creators of The Topologies of Zelda: Triforce) starts off with the original level (bar the enemies) which you play through normally, but then things get weird. The early levels do simple things like rotating the screen 90 degrees, but as you go on things get stranger and harder.
There’s a smorgasbord of different effects and modifiers on offer as you make your way through the levels – such as the screen tilting depending on how fast you run, viewing the whole level at once, slow motion, hyper-speed, the level mapped onto a mobius strip or even you having to play 16 versions at the same time. It’s a very strange experience playing through a level that you’re so familiar with in so many different ways. It makes a 30 level metagame out of a single classic level. By the end you’ll have an even better appreciation for the iconic level and you’ll be able to play through it blindfolded!
