Abandoned 64 is a very inventive narrative-driven adventure where you exploit bugs and glitches to help you explore an abandoned Zelda-esque N64 game.
In Abandoned 64 you are playing an abandoned mid-development version of an old Ocarina of Time-esque N64 game. The cart belonged to a playtester and is filled with bugs, glitches and unfinished environments. You need to use these bugs to your advantage as you explore the game and along the way you’ll learn more about the story of why the game was abandoned.
It’s a very inventive piece of storytelling that does a great job of recreating the look and feel of a classic N64 game. It has lots of great little touches that help sell the idea of it being an abandoned game that was too ambitious for its own good and had to drastically scale back its scope to ever have a hope of seeing a final release. There’s real charm, humor and sadness about the bugs, T-posing characters, re-used assets and cut features you discover along the way. In this game the bugs are definitely a feature. Highly recommended.
