Abyss Asylum is a creepy and atmospheric tunnel-runner style game where you guide yourself down a nightmarish hole deep into your subconscious.
Created for Ludum Dare 48, in Abyss Asylum you take control of a patient who is locked up in a mental asylum. You can wander around your cell and examine the writing on the walls as much as you like, but then when you go to sleep something strange happens. The floor falls away and you start to fall deeper and deeper into your subconsciousness.
As you fall you can guide yourself into soft pillows to help slow down your descent. This is particularly handy as your character continually speeds up otherwise, making it hard to dodge the various obstacles in your way. Hit any obstacle and you’ll instantly wake up in your cell again, but your record depth will now be displayed on the wall.
It’s a simple but addictive game with challenging gameplay and a tense surreal nightmarish atmosphere as you descend deeper into your subconscious. There are some great design choices – such as the high score being written on your cell wall and the transitions between the cell and the fall. Highly recommended.
