Alistair’s Magic Box – Emulator

Alistair’s Magic Box is a Sega Genesis emulator core that can introduce a new error in the level code or even switch to a totally different Sonic game every time you collect a ring!

Alistair’s Magic Box isn’t a game, but it does introduce a whole new way to play some classic ones. It’s compatible with pretty much all the Sonic games on Genesis, Master System and Game Gear, and allows you to fiddle with settings to create some pretty wild results.

You can set it up to automatically switch games whenever you pick up a ring (or every 10/30 seconds) and you can set it up to introduce and remove visual glitches spending on different time or ring collection variables. What’s perhaps most entertaining about it is that you can set it up so that every ring you collect introduces random errors in the level code though. Things get pretty crazy quickly in this mode and can render levels unrecognisable (and often unplayable), but it’s a hell of a lot of fun.

It takes a little fiddling around to get it set up but it’s definitely worth it. There are lots of different options to mess around with and the glitches throw up lots of fun surprises and ways to die. You never know what to expect in each glitchy level!

Note: You’ll also need some Sonic ROMS and the 32-bit Windows version of RetroArch to play. Follow the instructions on the Alistair’s Magic Box page to play.
