American Mall is a fast paced business management game that highlights the plight of brick and mortar shopping malls as they try to survive in a world that is increasingly shifting towards online commerce.
Decades of overbuilding and the rise of online shopping have created a very harsh economic climate for the modern day American mall. Many malls are now doomed to a gradual decline in commerce and an inevitable closure. American Mall puts you in charge of one such mall and tasks you with trying to keep it open for as long as possible.
The gameplay in American Mall is pretty fast paced and sees you carrying out a variety of tasks – from picking up garbage and disposing of pesky cyberpunks to negotiating with store owners and making important decisions about promotion, upgrades and budget cuts. There are even fun (and challenging) little minigames that pop up now and again that you have to complete to keep happiness levels up.
Much like in real life, none of your actions will actually save your mall from its impending doom, but you may be able to make it survive for longer. It’s an interesting and slightly depressing experience as you try to keep your mall limping along in a modern age where no amount of budget cuts and novelty promotions will allow you to compete with the likes of Amazon. How long will your mall survive?
