Apoptosis is a beautiful and thought provoking narrative experience that shows the effects of cancer on the inside and the outside – with you directing the spread of a tumor whilst listening to a heartfelt narration by the partner of the afflicted.
Apoptosis makes a point of being an unpleasant experience – visually it looks very nice but the slow spread of cancer is very unsettling to watch – which is compounded by the fact that it’s you who makes it grow. You point and click your mouse to spread the disease, connecting nodes and triggering narration by the patients partner – who details how they met, the onset of the cancer and how it affected both of them, with her helplessly watching as the cancer turn him into a shell of his former self.
It’s certainly not an enjoyable game – given the source material there’s no way it really can be – but Apoptosis is an experience we’d highly recommend giving a go. It’s a beautiful, emotional and thought provoking experience that will stay with you long after completion. Powerful stuff.
