Back to The Future Part III: Timeline of Monkey Island is a fan made mash up to two beloved franchises, which reimagines the third Back to the Future movie, with Doc being transported to Melee Island (from The Secret of Monkey Island) instead of the Wild West!
It is quite an unlikely mash-up, but Back to The Future Part III: Timeline of Monkey Island works remarkably well. It takes place immediately after the events of the second Back to the Future movie, with the Delorean being struck by lighting and sending Doc Brown back in time. The main difference here being that instead of being sent back to the Wild West, he’s sent back to a little carribean island called “Melee Island” in 1655/ According to a picture of his tombstone, Doc is then soon shot dead by William “Dogfish” Tannen – you have to go back and save him before it’s too late!
Taking one to two hours to play through, Back to The Future Part III: Timeline of Monkey Island is a fun little point and click romp that’s full of fun little in-jokes and pop culture references. Melee Island does feel a little emptier than it does in the official games, but that’s understandable considering it’s the work of a lone developer, plus there are lots of new areas that take you to some very unexpected places! There are a few little grammatical errors but on the whole the story is great and the dialogue retains the wit of the classic Lucasarts’ games.
If you’re a fan of classic Lucasarts point and click adventures then you’ll get a real kick out of Back to The Future Part III: Timeline of Monkey Island. The pixel art animation is excellent, the humor is spot on, it’s packed full of fan service and it’s just a joy to set foot on Melee Island again. Highly recommended.
