Backmask is an inventive little audio puzzle game where you listen to old cassette tapes and try to decode the secret messages hidden within them.
Created for the Brackeys Jam 2020.2, in Backmask you are an agent who has been tasked with deciphering the messages hidden in the audio of a bunch of cassette tapes. Some messages are as easy as listening to words spelled out via the phonetic alphabet (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, etc), but as you progress things get trickier – requiring you to speed up the tape or even play it backwards to hear the hidden messages. Once you decipher the message then you simply write the word(s) down on the piece of paper you’ve been supplied and you’ll be sent a new tape if you get it correct.
It’s a fun little puzzler with a great concept and a nice bit of audio tape nostalgia. The voice acting in the tapes is particularly impressive, adding a welcome bit of humor to the proceedings. A tape based puzzler well worth pressing play on.
