Billy Went To A Carnival is a weird and darkly comedic horror RPG where a buxom carnival master traps you in her ghost carnival.
Created by A. V. Dossos (creator of A House for Alesa and There is Something in the Anderghast Mine), Billy Went To A Carnival is a twisted horror RPG where a boy and his crush get trapped in a cursed carnival. The carnival in question appears every ten years and it just so happens that tonight is the ten year anniversary of the last sighting. Wanting to impress your crush, you go and check it out. What’s the worst that could happen?
Billy Went To A Carnival is a little rough and ready, and has a bit of a mishmash of art styles, but it’s a lot of fun and has some great ideas. The turn-based RPG combat is simple, but well balanced and sees you unlocking a LOT of new moves as you level up your characters. There are lots of different characters you meet that you can add to your team, each of which have their own fun little dialogue interjections and a wide array of unlockable moves. It’s also one of the few RPGs that totally allows you to bypass any grinding, thanks to a helpful stranger who can level you up instantly if you ask him.
It’s a very unique take on the RPG genre that has an interesting blend of horror and pitch black humor. The eclectic bunch of NPCs and team members you meet along the way are very entertaining, and the game even allows you to customize your experience significantly by naming certain things and people. Highly recommended.
