BVOVB: Bruising Vengeance of the Vintage Boxer is a fantastic little retro black and white styled side-scrolling beat ‘em up where a washed up old boxer sets out to save his stolen dog.
In BVOVD: Bruising Vengeance of the Vintage Boxer, you step into the vintage shoes of a retired boxer called John, whose dog is stolen by a gang of thugs while he’s shopping for beer and sausages. John promptly goes full John Wick on the gang as he leaves a trail of dead bodies in his wake and hunts for his missing dog.
The side-scrolling beat ‘em up gameplay of BVOVB is fairly simple, but brutal, challenging and very satisfying. You have an attack button and a block button, and the ability to use weapons, throws and devastating head-buts. Taking out one enemy is pretty easy, but things can get tricky if more than one attack at a time, and you need to be careful as you only have three lives to exact your vengeance.
The vintage art style of BVOVB is fantastic, with all of the characters and backgrounds being based on old pictures from the 1910s, 20s and 30s. It gives the game a very unique aesthetic and adds another layer of Python-esque absurdity to your brutal rampage. It’s full of fun little gags and knowingly cheesy one liners and the retro side-scrolling beat ‘em up gameplay is surprisingly entertaining. Highly recommended.
