Close Your Eyes is a creepy, cerebral and surreal sci-fi horror adventure full of great puzzle design and monsters that only attack you if you look at them.
In Close Your Eyes you take control of a patient who has just undergone an experimental surgery technique. After going through a few tests it becomes apparent that the research facility you’re in is undergoing some severe technical issues and monsters known as ‘Husks’ start to stalk the halls. Interestingly these monsters can only see you if you have your eyes open, and closing your eyes has other benefits too – such as allowing you to see hidden messages and electrical circuits.
The narrative is mainly relayed through clues in the environment and messages that you can see when your eyes are closed. It starts off feeling like a standard monster horror, but as you dig below the surface you find that there’s a lot more going on than first meets the eye (or E.Y.E.). It’s a clever piece of sci-fi storytelling and takes some interesting (and surreal) twists along the way.
Another welcome surprise in Close Your Eyes is how great the puzzle design is. They start off as simple ‘collect keycard to open door’ puzzles, but as you progress the game slowly morphs into a fully fledged puzzle adventure, full of inventive puzzle design and interesting twists on the gameplay.
Close Your Eyes does initially look like just another ‘run away from the monster’ first person horror adventure, but the longer you play the more you realise that there’s far more to it than that. It really impresses with it’s dark sci-fi narrative, clever puzzle design and the way it takes you to some truly bizarre places along the way. An eye opening horror adventure well worth setting your sights on.
