Courage: The Videogame was a cancelled Courage the Cowardly Dog PS1 game that never saw the light of day, until some long lost files were found on an old hard drive bought in a yard sale. Now you can play it in all of its glitchy glory!
Obviously most of the above statement isn’t true, Courage: The Videogame is a creepy ARG puzzle game where the glitches in its faux lost video game form an integral part of the experience. The goal is to reach all three of the [Data Missing] screens which are accessed by solving puzzles and cracking codes that are not just within the game, but within the game files themselves.
There’s a lot going on in the game, and you’ll have to think way outside of the box to crack it’s tougher puzzles (such as using a spectrogram app to decode a map). Due to the complexity of some of the puzzles it’s very unlikely you’ll be able to crack the game yourself, but the comments section of the Itch page will help point the way.
There are some creepy moments, but on the whole it’s quite delightful, with charming retro PS1 styled visuals and Courage looks very cute in 3D. At the time of writing there are still some things to be worked out (such as the meaning of three hidden phrases) and the dev is teasing more content that he found on another hard drive. It’s going to be a while until we find out what’s really going on at the heart of Courage: The Videogame!
