Crank It! Is a tense multitasking horror game where you have to crank for your life at the bottom of a mineshaft.
Created for the TFR Game jam (with a theme of Shovelware Horror), Crank It! is a tricky little horror game where you’re an employee in a monster-filled mineshaft. After a little introduction from your oddball supervisor, you then set about your tasks – cranking a dynamo to recharge batteries, which you then use to fend off monsters that lurk in the dark.
You have a microphone to help locate monsters and three sets of lights that surround you. Flashing the lights scares off the monsters, but they also instantly deplete the battery, so you need to be sure the monsters are there before you use them.
While you’re doing all this, you also need to interact with a computer using a typing-based interface. There are various tasks you need to perform on the computer to open doors, power up equipment and hopefully make your escape. It won’t be easy though.
Taking around 20 minutes to play through, it’s an excellent multitasking horror game that manages to be scary and creative, while still having a few nods to the Shovelware Horror theme of the game jam (such as the incredibly loud jump scares and your job making absolutely no sense). It’s a lot of fun – a tense and terrifying horror game that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Highly recommended.
