Devolverland Expo is a first person “marketing simulator” set within an abandoned convention center that contains the remains of a mysteriously cancelled Devolver Digital game expo.
With E3 and most other game expos being cancelled this year most publishing companies have just resorted to live streaming their presentations and game trailers, but Devolver Digital has gone one better – they’ve turned a gaming convention into a game! A little like EEK3, in Devolverland Expo you get to explore a large virtual games expo filled with stalls and trailers for upcoming games.
There are a lot of great looking games, particular highlights being Carrion, Serious Sam 4 and Fall Guys. However getting around the convention center may be a little tricky as there’s a mysterious entity that doesn’t want you to be there and it’s patrolled by armed security drones. The security drones aren’t too hard to sneak past though and you can use a T-shirt gun to temporarily disable them (and to activate out of reach buttons or clothe dummies).
It takes around an hour to play through Devolverland Expo and there’s a nice mixture of stealth action gameplay, trailers for interesting upcoming games, humorous, horror and lots of fun little easter eggs to discover. It’s a very well crafted experience that does its job of marketing Devolver Digital’s upcoming games whilst still providing and entertaining gaming experience in itself. It really wouldn’t be so bad if E3 was permanently replaced by virtual game expo experiences like this!
