Doki Doki Literature Club is a surprisingly disturbing visual novel set in a poetry writing club, that really gets under your skin unlike anything else.
To say too much about Doki Doki Literature Club will spoil the surprises but needless to say it’s not the whimsical Anime-style dating game it pretends to be. That isn’t a spoiler, as you’ll get the first indication of this right at the start of the game, with a warning that “this game is not suitable for children or those that are easily disturbed”.
Other than the initial warning, for the first hour or so of gameplay Doki Doki Literature Club plays much like a traditional Anime-style visual novel dating game, with you playing a male student at a school who has just joined a literature club with four quirky girls. It all seems fairly pleasant, with you chatting to the girls, getting to know them and writing poetry together. However, at around the one hour mark things start to get very weird, and from then on you’re in for one hell of a ride.
The first hour of Doki Doki Literature Club does drag a little if you’re not into visual novels, but it’s certainly worth sticking with as the game features some groundbreaking game design that constantly throws up clever surprises and dark twists. Highly recommended.
