Dystoria is a super cool neon-filled zero-g six-axis space shooter with Tron-style visuals and gameplay feels like a blend of Super Mario Galaxy, Super Stardust and Wipeout.
In Dystoria you control a ship that sticks to any surface allowing you to scale nearly every part of the complex structures that make up each level. Your goal in each level is to find three hidden orbs and make it to the exit – with a few secrets to find and a few enemies to blast on the way. As you progress you’ll be able to unolck new weapons and equipment which not only add a bit more power, but also allow you to tackle enemies differently – such as using homing missiles or the sniper-style laser cannon.
It’s an interesting concept, that blends exploration, platforming and shooter mechanics to create a very cool action-packed sci-fi adventure that can be more than a little disorientating at times as you cling to its walls and ceilings. The audio and visual design are also particular highlights, embracing its neon-filled 80’s sci-fi style wholeheartedly to create a fabulous retro-futuristic vibe (the narrative even riffs on arcade game premise of The Last Starfighter). Well worth checking out for a slick sci-fi adventure packed full of style and dizzying six-axis arcade action.
