Exit Mask is a very intense, claustrophobic and unsettling first person psychological horror game about dealing with the ugly thought, patterns and compulsions within.
Created by Stef Pinto, in Exit Mask you traverse a series of differently themed surreal and nightmarish labyrinthine levels that appear to represent your inner psyche. It’s a very unsettling place where your obsessive thought patterns and dark compulsions manifest as monstrous beings that roam the world. Interestingly, you can’t kill these monsters – you need to learn to avoid them and co-exist alongside them to reach the end of each level.
Taking around 45 minutes to play through, Exit Mask is easily one of the most intense and unsettling psychological horror experiences around and you should definitely steer clear if you’re easily triggered. The oppressive black and white visuals, the innerving soundtrack, the imagery, the freaky creatures and the subject matter all combine to create a gaming experience that really gets under your skin. It’s certainly not a pleasant experience, but it is a brilliantly bizarre psychological nightmare well worth delving into.
