FAIF is a unique tile based puzzle RPG with a unique gambling-focused combat system in which players do combat by selecting five adjacent tiles from a grid, which represent your five possible actions, then hoping that the one they want is randomly selected.
FAIF’s combat grid is made up of Hearts, Diamonds, Swords and Skulls. You must select five of these tiles, with an aim of defeating the (AI or Online Multiplayer) enemy that you’re duelling. The tiles you select don’t have to be in a straight line, but they do have to be connected so you can’t just pick and choose tiles from across the grid. Once you’ve made your selection, only one of these tiles will be randomly selected to represent your action for that round. Hearts increase your health, Diamonds give you some cash to spend on spells in the shop, skulls reduce your health by one and swords do +1 damage to your opponent for every skull that was in your selection of five tiles. This means that (withstanding spells) the only way to do damage to your opponent is to risk damage to yourself by having one or more skulls in your selection.
It takes a couple of turns to wrap your head around, but once you get to grips with it, FAIF really impresses with its addictive gameplay and unique combat system where the only way to do damage is to risk getting damaged yourself. A fun balancing act of risk and reward.
