He Keeps Me Here is a short, surreal and thought provoking little first person horror adventure where you find yourself trapped in a room and unable to ever leave because “He” keeps you there.
Taking just a few minutes to play through, He Keeps Me Here puts you in the role of a boy who is trapped in a small room with some basic furnishings, a bed, a mirror, a window and a picture of a girl he longs to be with. Clicking on objects will tell you a little more about your thoughts on them and progress the narrative, while hopefully leading to some means of escape…
Note: The rest of this article contains major spoilers. It’s highly recommended to play the game before reading on (it only takes a few minutes).
There’s one terrifying jump scare moment in He Keeps Me Here, but what really gets under your skin is what happens when you smash that mirror, when everything flips and everything falls into place. You discover why ‘He’ will never let you leave, why you haven’t been able to be with her, why the clock in your room was reversed – you ARE the reflection and ‘He’ is the real you.
Your whole world was the room the mirror because that’s all the mirror could see and the only way out was through the mirror. What you’re going to do now that you’re out one can only guess, but you’re not of this world, you’re something other – you say it yourself while looking into the mirror early on “I’m nobody”.
It’s a clever piece of storytelling that doesn’t spell things out for you, but allows you to figure things out for yourself. You’ll be thinking about it for longer than you actually play it and you may be a little wary the next time you peer into a mirror!
