He-Man: The Beat ‘Em Up is a fantastic retro side scrolling beat ‘em up that sees He-Man, She-Ra and pals battling their way through Eternia to defeat the evil Hordak.
Created in the OpenBOR engine, He-Man: The Beat ‘Em Up is an incredible beat ‘em up where you and up to three other players battle your way through 28 levels of old school side-scrolling arcade fun based on the classic 80s TV cartoon. Hordak has invaded Eternia, banished Skeletor and Evil-Lyn from Snake Mountain and plans to steal the Diamonds of Power. Looks like a job for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe!
He-Man: The Beat ‘Em Up features a sizeable roster of characters from the He-Man/She-Ra universe, with He-Man, Orko, Man-At-Arms, BattleCat, Sorceress, Skeletor, Evil-Lyn, She-Ra, Ram-Man, Teela and Panthor all playable, and Thundercats’ Lion-O also joins the fight. All the characters have their own unique special moves, and some can temporarily transform, fly or summon the big cats (BattleCat and Panthor) to fight by their side.
The game features a versus mode and a story mode, with 28 levels spread across a map of Eternia to battle your way through. There’s a nice amount of variety to the level design and gameplay. The majority of the levels play like traditional side-scrolling beat ‘em ups, but there are also platforming levels, side scrolling shooter levels, and even oddities like a maze level and a level where you attempt to protect Cambro from enemy attacks. There are also plenty of boss fights, with you facing off lots of memorable baddies from the series, such as Beast Man, Mer-Man and Trap Jaw.
He-Man: The Beat ‘Em Up isn’t just a charming walk down memory lane, it’s a great beat ‘em up in its own right. The character animation and background art is superb (probably better than the actual TV show), the combat is lots of fun and the levels offer plenty of variety. By the power of Grayskull you owe it to yourself to check out this game. Highly recommended.
