Heatstroke is a very weird little game which sees you driving a car down a desert road, whilst transcribing H.P. Lovecraft’s “Beyond the Wall of Sleep”.
Playing a little like Desert Bus, but with some surreal Eldritch horror visuals and a whole lot of typing, Heatstroke sees you trying to keep your car on the road while typing out the entirety of Lovecraft’s Beyond the Wall of Sleep. At a word count of 4,316, it’s a fairly short story, but it’ll still take some time to type out, particularly as you have to keep looking up to see if you’re veering off the road! While not typing you can steer by clicking the steering wheel, listen to some extremely erratic music on the stereo and take in the strange scenery – such as the large floating eyeballs that appear every night.
It’s a very odd game, which may not be the ideal way to experience H.P. Lovecraft’s Beyond the Wall of Sleep, but it sure is a memorable one. The whole experience is quite maddenning (deliberately so) and it feels like you lose a little of your sanity with each mile you drive and each line your type.
