Heavy is the Crown is a charming and surprisingly touching little shepherding game where you tend to your flock by day and spend your earnings to buy food and maintain your croft at night.
In Heavy is the Crown you take on the role of an old shepherd who lives in an old croft house with his wife. During the day you look after your flock by scaring off wolves and rounding the sheep up to prevent them from running away. At the end of the day you’ll earn some cash depending on how many sheep you have left, which you can use to buy food, buy more sheep or build fences. Keeping your pantry stocked with food is especially important because if you or your wife skip too many diners then you’ll die.
It’s a charming little game with excellent pixel artwork and very sedate, but oddly addictive gameplay that keeps you coming back for more. You barely make any progress, but it’s the little touches that make the game and transform it from a simple sheepherding simulator to something that feels a lot more personal. Your wife doesn’t really do anything gameplay-wise, but she’s always there offering you words of encouragement, so you really feel bad when you don’t have enough money to put food on the table.
