I, Pencil INC is an odd little game inspired by Leonard Read’s I, Pencil essay, which plays like a reverse incremental clicker, as you try to create all the resources needed for making and selling pencils.
In I, Pencil INC your goal is simple – try to make and sell the most amount of pencils per minute as possible. However, making a pencil isn’t as simple as clicking a box that says “Make Pencils” – you have to make all the individual components for them first, such as the erasers, the metal bit, the lacquer and the slats. The resources to make those parts need to be mined and farmed, which can require trade deals, paying politicians or even going to war.
Needless to say there’s a lot of work that goes into making and selling the humble pencil, with a whole lot of interconnected processes that form a web of capitalism and everything feeds into something else. You’ll never end up making many pencils per minute, but it’s a fun little satire of the mechanization and instrumentalization of our lives and an eye opening look into how much work goes into making something as simple as a pencil.
