Jawbreaker is a very cool high score chasing 2D arcade beat ‘em up with fast and flowing combat that sees you attempting to beat up as many enemies as possible in a lift.
Back in the golden age of arcade gaming every self respecting beat ‘em up had an elevator section, so why not build a whole game in one? Jawbreaker delivers simple, but slick and stylish elevator beat ‘em up experience that’s playable in single player, co-op and competitive multiplayer.
The singleplayer and co-op modes see you attempting to beat up increasing numbers of enemies and earning a little health at the end of each round. It’s fairly simple, but great fun and can get quite frantic as you face more and more overwhelming odds. The competitive multiplayer mode is still based in the lift, but sees both players facing off against each other.
The combat is easy to pick up and play, but hard to master, with you having to time blocks, dodges and attacks to avoid taking as much damage as possible. As you fight you’ll fill your Special bar which can be used to unleash devastating special attacks. It’s a fun and fast paced combat style that can make for some very entertaining gameplay as you fight for survival in the cramped space of the elevator.
Jawbreaker does lack variety but it more than makes up for it with rewarding skill based combat and its beautifully animated combatants. A fight-filled elevator ride well worth boarding.
