Justice League United is an awesome old school side scrolling arcade beat ‘em up that sees Batman, Wonder Woman and their super pals teaming up against DC’s deadliest super villains.
Justice League United is a fantastic fan made project created in the OpenBOR engine that delivers a fun blend of shoot ‘em up and beat ‘em up Justice League arcade action. It features local co-op play across seven large stages with seven playable characters and lots of supervillains to beat up.
Gameplay is split up into three distinct styles of game modes – 2D side scrolling beat ‘em up action akin to the Batman and Robocop arcade games, Streets of Rage style 2.5D beat ‘em up action and side scrolling shoot em up sections with vehicles. It’s a nice mixture of game styles that adds a nice bit of variety and stops the gameplay from becoming too stale.
You can choose to play as Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Cyborg and Flash. Due to his super speed Flash is the most fun to play as, but each of them have their strengths and own selection of cool special moves. It’s a pretty tough game with some challenging boss fights (especially Reverse Flash) and you only have a finite number of continues so you will need to use a bit of skill to make it to the end.
Justice League United really impresses with its high level of polish, fan service, quality of character animation, variety of gameplay and old school side scrolling arcade action. An excellent outing for the superpowered pals.
