King of Machines is an excellent 16-bit styled side-scrolling beat ‘em up that draws inspiration from Turtles in Time and Armored Warriors as you kick ass in a heavily armed mech suit!
In King of Machines you take on the role of a mech pilot who has been deployed to take down an organization that’s threatening to take over the world. Or at least, that’s probably the story, it’s a little hard to tell with the game’s delightfully silly faux Engrish cutscenes that makes “all your base are belong to us” seem like shakespeare!
The full game takes around 30 minutes to play through and features a nice mixture of quirky cutscenes, side scrolling combat, boss fights, the occasional flying/driving section and a touch of anime oddity. The combat is a lot of fun, with your mecha having plenty of useful abilities up its sleeve and some powerful specials that you can unleash when the meters fill up. It’s full of fun surprises and it gets pretty challenging later on as you approach the final showdown. Highly recommended.
