Liquidators is a very intense first person thriller where you step into the shoes of the three brave Liquidators who saved the lives of millions by risking their lives under the reactor in Chernobyl in 1986.
In Liquidators take on the roles of Boris Baranov, Alexei Ananenko and Valeri Bezpalov – the three brave men who volunteered to enter a basement area of Chernobyl in the middle of a nuclear meltdown to save the lives of millions. The three of them managed to find and manually operate the valves required to drain 20 million litres of water from where they were stored before the molten nuclear material leaking from the core came into contact with it. If they’d failed then the resulting 3-5 megaton blast would have killed millions and left most of Europe uninhabitable for thousands of years. Thankfully for us all, they succeeded.
Obviously nothing can accurately simulate the terror of entering the basement of the site of the largest nuclear disaster in history, but Liquidators does a good job of giving you a taste of how horrifying it would be. It is essentially a horror game, but you can’t see the monster – it’s the radiation that lingers in the air and saps your life.
The goal in Liquidators is to open six valves that are located in different areas underneath Chernobyl. You can choose to play as either of the Liquidators, with each of them having useful unique skills. If one is overwhelmed by the radiation and becomes unconscious then you can choose another one to play as, but if they all die then it’s game over (and the game permanently saves your progress so you’d better be careful).
It’s a very tense experience with some excellent environmental design and some real edge-of-the-seat moments. The retro styled visuals work really well and solving how to reach each valve would be a lot of fun if it wasn’t so terrifying! It would be nice to be able to switch character without making the one you’re playing as go unconscious, but other than that it’s an exceptional game. An intense and claustrophobic experience that makes a great tribute to three brave souls who saved millions of lives.
