Lycanthorn is a fast paced Castlevania inspired standalone DOOM total conversion mod where you battle monsters and powerful bosses across a colorful 8-bit styled world.
In Lycanthorn you step into the shoes of a fearless vampire hunter called Rain who is also a werewolf. After receiving word about a great tower being erected on an island off the coast of Morvania, you set out there to vanquish the powerful vampire that has built their home there.
With eight fast paced retro styled levels, Lycanthorn really does feel like a first person version of the early Castlevania games. Your main weapon is your axe, but as you progress you’ll also collect a couple of special weapons (daggers and a tesla coil) that give you a little more range. The levels are short, but challenging and it only takes a few hits to deplete your health bar so you need to dodge attacks as much as possible. A lot of the boss fights are fairly easy, but they look fantastic and the final boss puts up a good fight.
It’s an excellent game that really does feel like you’ve stepped into an 8-bit Castlevania world. The color palate and the pixel art are fantastic and the fast paced hack ‘n slash gameplay is a lot of fun. Highly recommended.
