Meatly’s Storage World – Downloadable Game

Meatly’s Storage World is a short mascot horror game parody which may just have killed the entire genre.

Meatly’s Storage World was created by theMeatly, creator of the Bendy and the Ink Machine games (so he knows a thing or two about mascot horror games) and it takes a satirical swipe at the mascot horror game genre. The game takes place in a storage locker warehouse and sees you completing an arbitrary task while avoiding a creepy mascot.

It seems specifically to have its sights on Garten of BanBan and Poppy’s Playtime, but it does a good job of nailing a lot of cliches of the mascot horror genre (and horror games as a whole). Everything’s there – the unnecessarily heavy footsteps, the terrible flashlight batteries, a cheerful creepy mascot, illogical exposition via notes, and a once cheerful place turned creepy (though storage warehouse’s aren’t often that cheerful in the first place).

Despite all the cliches (or maybe because of them) Meatly’s Storage World is actually quite creepy, but where it really excels is the humor and expert parodying of classic tropes. Meatly’s Storage World probably won’t actually kill the mascot horror game genre, but maybe devs will try a little harder to avoid all the worn out cliches.
