Mega Man 2.5D takes fangames to new levels with the best Mega Man game that’s been released in years – complete with snazzy 2.5D visuals, classic Mega Man action platforming gameplay, a superb soundtrack, co-op play, beautifully animated cutscenes and a full roster of bosses to battle.
Mega Man 2.5D really does have everything fans of the series could want – it retains the classic challenging action platforming gameplay and pixel art visuals but adds a whole lot more. The switch to 2.5D not only looks cool, but it allows the devs to play with the perspective at different points in the game, allowing you to see platforms in the distance below you or flipping between axis as you go around a corner. And as well as looking great, Mega Man 2.5D also sounds superb, with a completely remixed chip-tune soundtrack (although you can switch to the original one in the options menu if you like).
The gameplay is satisfyingly challenging, especially the boss fights, although this time you can play co-op with a friend as Mega Man and Proto Man join forces. The roster of bosses include Shadow Man, Pharaoh Man, Quick Man, Snake Man, Tornado Man, Time Man, Star Man and Splash Woman, all with their uniquely themed levels and weapons to aquire once you defeat them. The level design is also fantastic throughout, packed full of inventive gameplay and nice little touches.
Mega Man 2.5D has been in development for 8 years and the hard work has really paid off. It’s a fantastic homage to a classic series that even surpasses it in many ways. Forget the abomination that was Mighty No.9, Mega Man 2.5D is a perfect update of the Blue Bomber’s classic gameplay fans have been crying out for. Highly recommended.
