NE_01 is a charming mini-first person metroidvania in which you play a space exploration robot who’s been jettisoned as scrap by the company that owns him. You have no idea where you are, you’re badly damaged, your battery is at 2%, you’re scared and your orders are to just find a place in the shade to sleep until your battery runs out. But will you follow orders?
You were nearing the end of your service and were going to be decommissioned when you got back to your companies headquarters anyway, so to make way for more valuable cargo aboard the ship you were jettisoned as scrap. You may be made of metal but you’re not stupid, you have feelings and a sense of self preservation – you don’t want to die. So you set out on a quest to explore the planet, recover your missing body parts and find a way to escape the planet you’re stranded on.
Taking around an hour to complete, NE_01 really impresses with its stylish low poly visuals, fun metroidvania-style exploration and excellent writing. You really do feel for the little robot, with all his quirky character traits and refusal to follow orders. He’s not scrap, he’s a fantastic little character who refuses to give up, no matter what the odds.
