Nightmare Kart is a fantastic “legally distinct” Bloodborne inspired PS1 styled kart racing game where a hunter slaughters beasts in a terrible dream world.
Created by Lilith (the creator of the excellent Bloodborne PSX), Nightmare Kart is essentially a Mario Kart style Bloodborne kart racing game in all but name. In fact is was originally going to be called “Bloodborne Kart”, but a C&D from Sony put an end to that and forced the develoepr to make some legally distinct changes (so for instance, instead of fighting Father Gascoigne, you’ll be fighting Father Gregory).
The game has 21 racers, 13 karts and 15 tracks, all heavily inspired by Bloodborne. It also has a full narrative-driven single-player campaign mode, a Free Play mode and split-screen multiplayer. The single-player campaign mode is particularly impressive, with lots of unlockables, excellent cutscenes, boss battles and three endings to discover.
It is a shame that Sony put an end to Bloodborne Kart, but the changes made to Nightmare Kart actually add a lot of charm and humor. It’s a lot of fun and it’s clear a lot of hard work and passion has gone into the project. If you like Bloodborne and karting, Nightmare Kart is a dream come true. Highly recommended.
