Northbury Grove: King’s Comfort is a tense VHS video nasty slasher styled first person horror adventure where you attempt to escape from a cheap roadside motel while being stalked by a psychopathic serial killer.
The VHS video nasty delights of Northbury Grove: King’s Comfort carry on from the previous Northbury Grove game (which we also recommend checking out), except this time you’re at a cheap motel a few miles away from the campsite in the previous episode. You wake up in your motel room, with no sign of your friends (Connor, Crystal and Grace from the previous instalment) and promptly go searching for a phone to call them on. However, it soon becomes apparent that a certain machete wielding psychopath is now stalking the grounds of the motel. You’ll have to avoid him and find a way to contact the police to survive.
Unlike Northbury Grove, there’s not much in the way of stealth in Northbury Grove: King’s Comfort, so the best thing to do when you’re spotted by the psycho is to run like hell. You need to find various sets of keys (and a crowbar) which are hidden around the motel, giving you access to new areas of the motel (and eventually the office with the phone in it).
Much like its predecessor, Northbury Grove: King’s Comfort is a very tense and unsettling game with a great VHS video nasty visual style and a fantastic reactive audio score which really gets the adrenaline flowing when you’re being chased. It’s also got lots of great little touches – such as all the various motel rooms that are littered with easter eggs and signs that their inhabitants were clearly up to no good. You may not have much time to stop and look at them though while running for your life from a deranged psychopath!
