Nykrig is a stylish, cerebral and claustrophobic twin stick shoot ‘em up in which you blast geometric enemies in darkened enclosed spaces.
Playing a little like a more sombre and sinister version of Geometry Wars, Nykrig sees you blasting your way through a series of claustrophobic levels. The levels are pitch black, but you can use your light to allow you to see and there are the occasional power-ups that can light up the whole level for short periods of time. When fighting enemies you can either let out a constant stream of weak bullets or you can shoot less often and fire more powerful ones.
Interestingly Nykrig is peppered with small sections of text that allude to a war and the enemy will only attack you once you are aiming your light at them – giving you the feeling that you are the aggressor here and are a soldier in a war that you don’t believe in. It’s an interesting concept with an art style and audio design that do a great job of creating an oppressive and claustrophobic atmosphere that gets under your skin. You don’t feel good for completing a level of Nykrig, you just feel that you’ve done what was asked of you.
