One’s Own Exile is a very dark and harrowing narrative-driven adventure about a young woman who must erase her identity to avoid persecution.
In One’s Own Exile you follow the story of a young woman called Sybil, who has been brought up under a different faith from the majority of the others in her kingdom. The authorities have recently raided her house and found all of her religious items and are now attempting to hunt her down and kill her as a witch. The only way out of the town she’s in is through a heavily guarded gate, but she’ll need to sacrifice her identity to get through it.
To pass through the gate successfully you’ll need to search for useful information, figure out how to get rid of the physical features/items that could give her away and answer specific questions correctly. Failure will generally lead to an unpleasant death and one of the eight different endings.
There are a few minor typos/translation errors, but aside from that One’s Own Exile is a fantastic game. The retro pixel art visuals and color palette are excellent, there are lots of great little lore details and it tells a powerful story that has some obvious real-world comparisons. You really feel for Sybil as she sacrifices everything just to live. Highly recommended.
