Paranormal Buddies is a charming and creepy PS1 styled horror visual novel that follows two friends as they try to reach spirits with a Ouija Board.
Created for the Spooktober 3rd Annual Visual Novel Jam, Paranormal Buddies is a fun little horror game where a couple of friends called Takeo and Hana, who are attempting to speak to the dead. Hana is the one who wants to talk to the dead and Takeo is pretty much along for the ride and records everything with his VHS camcorder.
Hana has managed to get her hands on a Ouija board which she plans to use to talk to the spirits. Takeo is dubious of the whole idea, but agrees to go along. During the ouija board sequences you effectively take on the role of the spirit and can direct the planchette around the board to answer Takeo and Hana’s questions. There are four endings to discover based on your choices.
It’s a fun little horror game with a great visual style, a lot of charm, quirky characters and some bone chilling moments. Being able to control what the ouija board says is a great touch and makes you feel like you’re the spirit that’s tormenting Takeo and Hana. The dev did plan on adding more endings but didn’t manage due to the time constraints of the jam. Even so the four endings in the game are all satisfyingly different and freaky. Don’t expect any happy endings though – if movies have taught us anything, it’s that messing with Ouija boards never ends well!
