PENUMBRA features in interesting blend of Sci-Fi, oriental mysticism, puzzle solving, Antichamber-esque reconfiguring spaces and horror, as you unravel the secrets of a mysterious underground obelisk.
Taking around fifteen minutes to play through, PENUMBRA takes place at an excavation site where a team have found a mysterious 2001: A Space Odyssey-esqe obelisk that has some rather interesting properties. As you explore the obelisk you enter a mysterious reconfiguring maze-like world filled with old Japanese buildings and dark spirits that must be avoided.
PENUMBRA can feel a little like a collection of different scenes rather than a cohesive experience at times and the spider section could do with an extra checkpoint, but it’s in an interesting game with a great sense of mystery and some freaky moments. The audio and visual design is excellent and you’re never sure what strange sights will await you around the next corner, or what will be there when you turn around!
