Perfect Vermin is a delightfully destructive and increasingly unsettling little first person horror game where you attempt to locate flesh monsters that are posing as office furniture, then pulverize them with a sledgehammer.
Created by ItsTheMaceo (creator of the excellent Swallow the Sea and Heatstroke) in Perfect Vermin you are given a sledgehammer and must use it to smash fleshy vermin that are posing as furniture in an office building. You can smash anything you like without risk of penalty, but you only have a limited amount of time – so you really want to focus on locating the vermin.
Perfect Vermin’s flesh monsters look exactly like the rest of the office furniture but they do have one big tell – they’re not very good at hiding. So if you notice a piece of furniture that’s out of place (such as a swivel chair in the toilets of a desk sitting across a walkway) then it’s a sure fire bet that you should whack it with your hammer – at which point you’ll be treated to a healthy dose of blood splatter and your vermin counter will drop by one.
Once you eliminate all the vermin on a level then you head back to the elevator and start the next floor (where things will get even weirder). Throughout all this a newscaster comments on your rampage and as things get weirder in the office, he also gets a lot weirder…
Taking around 15 minutes to play through, Perfect Vermin’s office smashing antics are an absolute blast. The way the normal office furniture shatters and the vermin splat when you hit them is very satisfying. The narrative is also perfectly executed, with lots of little clues about what’s really going on throughout and an ending that gives much more significance to your vermin-splatting rampage. Highly recommended.
