PICOHOT is (rather incredibly) a Pico-8 powered demake of SUPERHOT (the stylish first person shooter where time only moves when you do) created by the developers of SUPERHOT.
There are many things that the retro 8-bit styled Pico-8 engine can do, but recreating a time-bending first person shooter really shouldn’t be one of them. Remarkably though the developers of PICOHOT (and SUPERHOT) have managed this feat. Admittedly they’ve had to cut a few corners, but the style and the core “time only moves when you do” gameplay of SUPERHOT is all there, and it’s a lot of fun!
PICOHOT features a handful of levels and an endless mode to test your skills on. You can strafe around bullets, punch, shoot guns and throw guns to stun enemies (much like in the original game). The only major difference is that you can’t turn, you can just move forwards, backwards and strafe (the Pico-8 virtual console only has 6 input buttons), but you soon get used to it.
Recreating SUPERHOT in Pico-8 is no mean feat and the devs have pretty much nailed it. The gameplay is spot-on and visually it feels like a SUPERHOT game, you even get the “SUPER, HOT, SUPER, HOT” flashing up between levels! Highly recommended.
