Pumpkin Eater is a truly horrifying visual novel about a mother’s madness and a decomposing pumpkin boy.
Created for the Object Head Jam 2021, Pumpkin Eater is a horror visual novel that tells the tragic tale of a boy who is killed in a car accident. The car accident in question occurs right at the start of the game and sees the boy’s head splatting when it’s run over by a car that’s being driven by his father.
The rest of the story revolves around the mother’s rather odd coping mechanism of denial, madness and replacing the boy’s head with a pumpkin. What follows is a stomach churning and extremely descriptive account of what happened in the following days and the state of decomposition the boy’s body went through.
There’s very little in the way of interaction in Pumpkin Eater (you just click to progress the story) but the narrative is so riveting that it really pulls you in. The hand drawn visuals are fairly simple, but effective and the descriptions of the son’s decomposing body are both medically accurate and horrifying. Highly recommended
