Punch-Out Doom is an excellent Doom total conversion mod that allows you to jump into the ring of the NES classic Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! game and beat up your rivals in first person!
In Punch-Out Doom players can step into the shoes of Little Mac as he attempts to fight his way up the ranks of the World Video Boxing Association, under the mentorship of Doc Luis. All the characters from the original Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! are there (including Mike Tyson) and there are also characters from the SNES game, such as Gabby Jay, Masked Muscle, Rick Bruiser. and Aran Ryan.
You have two attack types (high and low) that you can switch between by using the weapon select button and you can pull off combos of punches using the left and right attack. It starts off fairly easily, but as you work your way up the ranks your opponents get much tougher and they have unique fighting styles and special skills that you have to account for. You’re pretty nimble and you can unleash a flurry of punches, but you can only take a few hits before Referee Mario will be counting you out. There are also some fun bonus levels, such as being able to stand outside the ring and watch fighters face off or going for a run along a harbour with your trainer.
Doom and Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! does seem like a very odd mix, but it works surprisingly well and requires real skill to dodge, weave and punch your way through the later opponents. The retro NES styled visuals work wonderfully and it’s packed full of great little touches. Highly recommended.
Note: You will need an official Doom .WAD file to play Punch-Out Doom. This can be derived from the game files of Doom, Doom 2 or Final Doom. Place the WAD file in the Punch-Out Doom folder then drag the Punchout.wad on top of the zdoom.exe to play.
Controls: Be sure to go into the “Rules” menu to customize these or you won’t be able to control your fighter well.
