Red Trees is a surprisingly sweet and heartfelt little pixel art horror adventure where a young girl goes in search of a monster that’s terrorising her town.
In Red Trees you follow the adventure of a young girl called Artemis who sets out in search of a monster after having a troubling dream. The monster in question is said to stay in the woodland surrounding your town and it’s rumored to be the reason that rabbits have been going missing from the local rabbit farm. Also, last night one of the residents was badly injured when he had a run-in with the monster.
The gameplay in Red Trees is essentially a chain of fetch quests where you get an object, find the person who needs it the most, then why give you an object that someone else needs (and so on). It’s fairly simple, but it’s a great way to get to know all the inhabitants of your town and their odd little eccentricities. There’s a little girl with a taste for the dark arts, a man who is obsessed with cats and a mayor who is clearly a child who collects dolls. It’s a very pleasant place, but all the while there are hints of darkness in the outside world.
It takes around 30 minutes to play through Red Trees and it’s an absolutely delightful adventure. It’s great fun getting to know all its oddball residents and it’s a very uplifting experience with a surprising touching ending. Highly recommended.
