Return of the Slimepires is a great little PICO-8 powered open world 2D action platformer where you attempt to reach safety in an underground bunker filled with slime monsters.
Taking place in an apocalyptic future where the surface of Earth is overrun with slime monsters, Return of the Slimepires follows a lone human who has awoken in an underground bunker. The bunker has recently been overrun with the monsters, and you need to make your way through the bunker, blast slimes and figure out a way into the bunker’s safe room.
All the while you need to be careful not to come into contact with the slimes. If you do, you’ll only have a limited time to reach a checkpoint and decontaminate yourself. Otherwise you’ll turn into a slime monster – which does mean you can fly around the world at your leisure, but also means you can’t activate any human mechanisms.
Taking around 15 minutes to play through, it’s a great little bite-sized adventure with excellent pixel art visuals and some great level design. The ability to turn into your enemy is a great touch and there are even two different endings to find on your journey to the safe house.
