Return of the Tentacle: Prologue is a fantastic fan made sequel to the Lucasarts classic Day of the Tentacle, which sees Purple Tentacle up to his old tricks and Bernard, Laverne and Hoagie attempting to put an end to his nefarious plans.
Day of the Tentacle is easily one of the greatest point and click adventures ever made, which makes it a little disappointing that we never got to see Bernard and pals in any future adventures. Step forward Catmic Games, creators of a near-perfect fan made sequel in the form of Return of the Tentacle: Prologue, which sees the haples trio of Bernard, Laverne and Hoagie going on another oddball time travelling adventure to stop Purple Tentacle from enslaving the entire human race (again!)
If you didn’t know Return of the Tentacle: Prologue was a fan made game it’d be nearly impossible to distinguish it from an official Lucasarts release. The artwork is spot on, with the characters and that iconic mansion looking very similar to the Day of the Tentacle remaster that was released a few years ago. The voice actors are obviously all soundalikes, but they’re all very good and for the most part sound very much like the originals. Whatsmore, the humor and puzzles feel very Lucasartsy, and you’ll even run into a few old friends from other Lucasarts adventures too!
Return of the Tentacle: Prologue may be the prologue for a (hopeful) full sequel coming in the future, but it’s a pretty fleshed out experience with around one and a half hours of gameplay. There are only four people working on the game so it may be some time until we see Bernard and pals again but it’s an absolute delight to spend some time with them in this fabulously funny adventure. Very highly recommended.
