ROMUT is an incredibly weird and unsettling first person psychological horror game where you hunt for grotesque mutant head monsters in the darkness.
In ROMUT you find yourself in a darkened corridor with a flashlight to light your way and the simple instruction to “destroy them all”. It soon turns out that they are referring to horrifying mutant head monsters and one is hidden in five separate areas which you can jump between by using your flashlight. Unlike most horror games, the flashlight is actually very well implemented, with it casting a realistic beam of light and you being able to direct it realistically with the mouse (instead of it being fixed in the center of your screen).
It’s a very weird and surreal experience which doesn’t really explain the narrative, but as ROMUT is “TUMOR” backwards it’s possible there’s an underlying message about destroying cancerous growths in the darkness. Finding the monsters in each area is pretty easy, but that doesn’t make it any less horrifying. The game has an incredibly intense and foreboding atmosphere and the sound design is very unsettling. Highly recommended.
