ROT: Purgatory Hill is a very freaky near-photorealistic first person horror adventure that draws inspiration from the Silent Hill series as you find yourself trapped in a nightmare after waking up in a crashed car in the middle of a forest.
In ROT: Purgatory Hill you wake up at the wheel of a crashed car, with the sound of a woman screaming in pain ahead of you. You have no idea who you are, who she is or what you’ve done, but the game will attempt to remind you over its short 15 minute play time.
Although ROT: Purgatory Hill takes place in an open woodland area it shares a lot in common with P.T., with you repeatedly exploring the same area, but with important differences each time. There are no real jump scares throughout, instead the terror comes from the excellent audio design and the incredible lighting and environmental effects.
It does use the same tricks a little too often, but it’s incredible how much the lighting, audio and environmental effects transform woodland area as you play through it. A tense little horror game that’s all about the atmosphere.
