Schwarzerblitz is a fantastic 3D polygonal fighting game that draws inspiration from 90s classics, with fluid combat, combos, lots of unlockables, 24 playable characters and a bat shit crazy story mode.
Created by lone developer Andrea Demetrio, Schwarzerblitz is a retro styled fighting game that draws inspiration from 90’s classics like Tekken and Virtua Fighter. It features a huge roster of characters, each with lots of unlockable skins, over 30 stages, lots of bonus unlockables, a classic arcade mode and a full story mode that revolves around an accident at a reality-distorsion-resonance (RDR) power plant, an alien planetoid and a secret government project known as “Schwarzer Blitz” (which translates to English as Black Lighting”).
It’s a lot of fun, and not just because of the nostalgia value. The combat is fast and fluid, with plenty of depth, combos and special moves. It has an innovative Trigger system that allows you to break guards and break combos. There’s a great variety of characters, each with their own unique personalities and moves. Also, the stages are very varied – ranging from fighting inside a confined elevator to fighting atop a speeding train or inside a glitchy cyberworld.
It’s a fighting game that doesn’t take itself too seriously (one of the characters is a raptor with a minigun for god sake), and it delivers a huge amount of content with a remarkable amount of polish and personality. A perfect love letter to the glory days of the 90’s polygonal fighter. Highly recommended.
