Shine Within is a touching Undertale-esque narrative-driven top-down puzzle action adventure set in a strange world filled with monsters who have become corrupted by despair.
In Shine Within you step into the shoes of a noble hero who has been called upon to complete an important quest. This requires aiding the various monsters in a strange world that’s been corrupted by despair. They may look a little odd, but the monsters are all friendly and if you show them a little kindness they can help you in return. However, there’s something else in there, a mysterious entity that promises power and seeks to end the monster’s world forever.
Taking around an hour to play through, Shine Within really impresses with its charming pixel artwork, interesting game world and beautifully told story. It’s a pleasure getting to know all the quirky little monsters and the metaphor for what they represent is well realised. There are even two very different endings, depending on whether you set out to cauterise the feelings that cause you hurt or open yourself up to friendship and love. Highly recommended.
