Solace Dreams is a Dark Souls and Silent Hill inspired survival horror standalone DOOM total conversion mod, set within the (very differently themed) nightmares of your missing class members.
In Solace Dreams you follow the story of a young girl called Yuna, who is caught in an earthquake and ends up adrift in an Eldritch plane of existence between life and the afterlife. When she awakens she finds herself in her schoolroom, but all the students are missing and on their desks are keys that open doors to their own personal nightmares. You need to venture into each one and try to save them.
The sheer amount of work that’s gone into creating Solace Dreams is incredible, with each individual nightmare being completely different from the last – one minute you’ll be fighting haunted suits of armor in medieval times and the next you’ll be mowing down flying sorceresses with an uzi in a nightclub. Some nightmares are better than others, but each one is unique and is packed full of great little details and is capped off with a big boss fight.
Solace Dreams features a nice mixture of puzzle solving, combat, survival horror gameplay and big Soulsian boss fights. The combat is much slower paced and tactical than what you’d expect from a DOOM mod and ammo is in short supply so you need to choose your shots wisely – sometimes it’s best to run away.
It’s a remarkable game with inventive level design, terrifying boss fights and lots of fun little easter eggs to discover. There are a few little rough edges and frustrations (the ammo supply is very unbalanced), but that’s understandable considering the size and scope of the game and the fact that it’s running on an engine that’s almost three decades old. This is one hell of a DOOM Mod. Highly recommended.
