Spent is an eye opening management game that sees you attempting to survive a month on a minimum wage job in America with only $1000 in savings to help you get by.
In Spent you take on the role of one of 14 million unemployed Americans who is struggling to make ends meet. You can choose to apply for one of three different jobs (warehouse worker, restaurant server and office temp), then try to deal with the various expenses life throws up at you – such as medical fees, rent, car expenses and things for your child. It is possible to make it through a month successfully but it’s very tough and you’ll have to take risks (such as not paying insurance) and sacrifice a lot.
Spent was created by the Urban Ministries For Durham, a poverty-focused charity organisation, so it does obviously have an agenda, bit it’s an eye opening experience nonetheless. Just because you have a job doesn’t mean you’re not living in poverty and every little decision can end up affecting whether you still have a roof over your head at the end of the month. It’s eye-opening stuff.
